Closing out the convention was guest speaker, Niki Ashton, NDP MP Churchill - Keewatinook Aski District.
She opens with, " labour's advocacy is critical especially given the economic times we live in." The number one issue affecting many Canadians today is growing inequality. Most effected; women, youth, people of colour. " Our government needs to address EI (employment insurance) funding. With the changing legislation passed in the 90's, only 40% of Canadians can access EI benefits.
Our government must bring back pay equity under new legislation. Women earn an average of 30% less than men in the same field.
Our youth, more and more young people are getting squeezed. Wages, house prices, precarious work."Today's young people are simply surviving she states."
We need to have a closer look at the TFWP ( temporary foreign worker program). Since 2006 our government has brought in more temp foreign workers than immigrants. This has created an under class in this country which benefits the few. "In order to fight inequality, we must attack the structures that create them, that being the government," she said, "and unions are key in the fight against inequality."
The convention would end with the swearing in of the new National Executive. Once again, congratulations to Valerie Roberts-Francis on her appointment to the National Board as VP for Region 2.
