We started by voting on resolutions to be added or amended to the Cope Ontario Constitution.
We had the honor of having John Cartwright , President of the Toronto and York Region Labour Council, as our first guest speaker.. The focus of his discussion was the upcoming provincial election. He poked a bit of fun at Hudak and his million jobs plan and how the numbers don't add up. He also stated how the right to work legislation being tossed around by the right wing conservatives was a big wake up call for the labour movement and how Hudak cannot be trusted. Hudak wants to gut peoples ability to earn a decent standard of living , take away our collective bargaining rights and to overall weaken the labour movement as we know it today and to destroy the type of Canada that we deserve.
His message is simple . We must be relentless in our fight to stop Hudak. !!!
Hudak is a job killer , doesn't care if people are paid poverty wages, he will divide our communities, squander billions in more corporate tax cuts, and he won't stand up for Canadian jobs.
Next was a report form Janice Best , Director of Cope Ontario. Janice submitted reports from all the locals in
Cope Ontario. In her reports , she high lighted the trials and tribulations and any major issues that were dealt with
in the recent past or that they are currently dealing with now.
Janice also touched on a few other areas . These include , benefit representative report , grievances and arbitration awards , an organizing report ( yes we were mentioned......our unsuccessful attempt at organizing non-union at
LHSC ) . Janice shared her thoughts with us on the upcoming provincial election.......great energizer ( STOP HUDAK). BTW....Janice is now known as " The Tweet Meister "....she has suddenly taken a liking to Twitter !!
She is a strong believer in social media and how it can make us stronger as a union and for connecting with your local membership. .
After lunch we welcomed Linda McQuaig- Journalist and best selling author , as our guest speaker . She is a true supporter of democracy and a sincere pleasure to listen too ! She really hits home a strong message , in particular ,the growing gap between the rich and the poor . She wasn't overly friendly when it came to big corporations and the gradual tax breaks they have received over the past decade or two either . Large corporations will stop at nothing to get everything ! If you get a chance to hear her speak ......do it . Alternatively , you can purchase one of the many books she has written or check out her column in the Globe and Mail.
Last order of the day , a discussion paper presented by Maureen Ohalloran . The topic , Why Unions Need to be Involved in Politics . There was a motion to adopt the paper , it was unanimous . The paper put forth many recommendations that Cope will en devour to achieve. .
Tonight......murder mystery dinner theater !!
