The day started at 8:30 with a COPE caucus which included 90 members of COPE/SEPB members
from across Canada.
Guest speaker , Ken Georgetti , , president of the CLC. speaks of the successes of the CLC and the
great things the labour movement has done. The labour movement has been battered by the conservative
party at both the federal and provincial level and how we must change our image in the public eye and defeat the conservative agenda. and build a strong foundation with all people across Canada both union and non-union alike.
Next guest speaker was Hassan Yussuff , secretary-Treasuer of CLC. He spoke of the enormous challenges facing the labour movement and how we as union leaders need to find ways to mobilize our members against these attacks of the conservative party austerity agenda.. He also talked about the different anti union bills being pushed through parlaiment and how these bills if passed will push the labour movement back decades. . We must all have a common vision and build a different kind of Canada that will protect workers rights and secure a future for all young people entering the work force..
Convention opening ceremonies commenced at 10:00 . Chief Billy Two Rivers gave the ceremonial opening
address and welcomes all delegates.
Next was the Mayor of Montreal , Denis Coderre . His open remark was , " I think there is a hockey game in town on Tuesday night , all bruin fans have to get out , woooo hoooo !! Go Habs. !!
He speaks of how we have to bring better working conditions to all Canadians , how we have to establish team work and have fair play for all.
He speaks of the changes being brought about by the federal conservatives . Just to name a few , the canada pension plan , door to door mail service and health and safety for all workers and how everyones qaulity of life will
suffer if the conservatives continue on this path of austerity.
Again , Ken Georgetti speaks of how we need to defeat the Harper/Hudak anti-worker legislation. He mentioned how the CLC has been lobbying senators in regards to bill C377 and how we got the support of 16 conservative senators to vote against the legislation. That is a huge success for the labour movement.
The attack on workers rights is regressive and backwards.. We still have alot of work to do and now is not a time for complacency. We need to make a positive and lasting change.
