The race for the presidents seat was decided by 40 votes out of nearly 4000 ballots cast .
Next there was a policy paper discussion , the topic was" Together for Fairness and Change." It was a bit of a recap of the Fairness Works Campaign. Go to the CLC website for a comprehensive look at the campaign.
Next was guest speaker , Thomas Mulcair , leader of the Federal opposition NDP party. As usual , Mr. Mulcair gave an exhilarating speech . He laid out his platform for the upcoming federal election in 2015. If elected , he plans to get right to work defending rights of workers all across the country . The Harper government is slowly but surely dismantling the labour movement , and if re- elected for another four years with a majority government , would decimate the labour movement as we know it today. He will strip workers fair wages , health and safety legislation and pension plans just to name a few . Why would he do that you ask ? His plan is to increase corporate profits for the large corporations with legislation against workers rights. Low wages and next to nothing for benefits mean one thing for large corporations..........PROFIT !!!!!
One more thing I found interesting that Tom Mulcair pointed out was that why can large corporations get tax breaks but everyday hard working Canadians can't !!!!
Over the noon break , we took part in a rally through the streets of downtown Montreal . It was a rally against the conservative austerity agenda . It was a sea of colorful flags from 60 different unions. I have pics and video footage . Will be posting to COPE 468 website so be sure to have a look.
There was a discussion surrounding the kidnapping of 300 school girls in Nigeria by Islamist Militants. to be sold on the black market for marriage and as sex slaves. The CLC condemns this action.
We then had a report from the Secretary Treasurer . The report stated that the CLC is in good financial state , even given the fact that a lot of money is being spent fighting the Stephen Harper Austerity Agenda.
The remainder of the afternoon was spent passing resolutions.
There will be a short blog tomorrow ......the convention wraps up at noon .
GO HABS !!!!!
