The afternoon kicked off with guest speaker Sharan Burrow - General Secretary . ITUC
Her message was simple , large corporations are killing the Canadian economy .
Corporations are receiving unprecedented tax breaks from the Harper government and at the same time reducing their work force.......this is nothing more than corporate greed.
The labour force is the voice of democracy , and only we can secure a future for our children.
Next speaker was Frank Graves . President EKOS research. He spoke on the domestic impact of the economic climate. The middle class is shrinking at a rapid pace and falling backward. Canadians feel that progress and a better future is unraveling. 62.5 % of Canadians believe the country is moving in the wrong direction . Overall quality of life is deteriorating ..Work places are doing poorly at work - life - balance . This is known as the era of diminished expectations.
Lastly , a policy presentation .....An Economy For A Fairer Tomorrow .
The main points surrounding this policy are as follows.
When prosperity is shared broadly , we should all prosper and enjoy a better quality of life. Household debt in the last 25 years has increased dramatically . The gap between the rich and the poor is widening . Public services are under constant attack. Canadians work 30 - 40 years and still live in poverty . A job should lift you out of poverty , not keep you in it.
